# Director Director is Shotstack's own AI agent, built into [Studio](https://app.shotstack.io/studio) in your Shotstack dashboard. Describe the video you want in the chat panel and Director builds it on the timeline. Ask for changes in plain words, or edit by hand. Both work on the same edit. ## Same edit as every other agent Director writes the same Edit JSON as the [MCP server](/agents/mcp-server) and the [CLI](/agents/cli), so its work isn't locked to Studio: - Render it through the Edit API like any other edit. - Save it as a [template](/architecting-an-application/templates) and render it with new data from your app. - Pick it up with your own agent: `shotstack template get ` fetches a template designed in Studio. ## When to use Director Use Director when you want an agent without setting one up: no client to connect and no skill to install. Use the MCP server or the CLI when you want your own agent, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, to do the work inside the tools you already use.
